Ottawa Bluesfest 2011 Line Up

(Flaming Lips at Bluesfest 2010 via Eh List Images)

Today kicks off the first day of the Ottawa Bluesfest. After 3 years of attending this local festival, this year won’t be any different. This is Ottawa’s biggest music festival that takes place at Lebreton Flats & the War Museum, near downtown Ottawa. This 13 day blues festival features bands that are anything but blues, acts like Death From Above 1979, Rise Against, Black Keys, and the Flaming Lips for the second time. There is of course some bands that you would expect at a blues festival like John Fogerty and Buddy Guy. This years line up is pretty jammed packed with a variety of bands that at you won’t be able to resist to see, like the Tragically Hip, Erykah Badu, the Tea Party, Mother Mother, Jennifer Hudson and even Infected Mushroom.

I plan to make this year’s Bluesfest more of a high school mix tape by going to all my high school faves like Coheed & Cambria, Death Cab for Cutie, Girl Talk, Cancer Bats, Tegan and Sarah, and Death From Above 1979.

View the complete 2011 Ottawa Bluesfest line up after the jump. Continue reading

Turntable.fm Lets You Jam With Your Friends Virtually #VIPfest

turntable.fm

Turntable.fm has been getting a lot of publicity lately as a place for people to meet and listen to music together. Users can roam around and join rooms to listen to music, or start their own rooms with friends. You can listen, chat, and vote on each others’ selections. The whole voting process adds a game layer to the experience and the service will probably end up creating some new Internet famous DJs (eg new Girl Talk).

Even Carles is getting in on the turntable.fm action and started a Twitter festival to bring a bunch of people into the new service and hear him “spin”. He probably got paid $36 to promote the new website so expect him to be announcing that he’ll be retiring his website now that he’s rich. Here are the deets of #VIPfest:

Last night, something special happened. VIPfest, a collection of relevant VIPs putting together an online VIP experience for the most relevant alts on the internet. So many relevant indie celebs stopped by the turntable.fm room, and we made history, If u were there, u know why it was VIP. If u weren’t there, u might never know what VIP means/feels like.

Anyways, this new music service seems like a cool crossroad of tech and music but sadly they hate people who are overly polite and say “eh”. Being Canadian means being left out of the turntable party.

World Unite Lucifer Youth Foundation (WU LYF) – Go Tell Fire To The Mountain

I want to believe WU LYF is a total off the cuff band that got together and we’re all “let’s just make music” and it was pretty awesome. If you dig a little deeper you find out they’ve signed a distribution deal with Universal Music Publishing and their manager is Warren Bramley, founder of the advertising firm four23. So while I like the music and I don’t believe in the traditional “selling out”, I still can’t help but think it’s the 2k11 version of boy bands. Anyways, I guess I don’t really give a shit. The video is fun and looks like something my friends and I could put together if we wanted to but we just don’t have time right now but could if we felt like it.

PS – Warren Bramley went to the Kelloggs Business School. Is there anything in the world lamer than that? Maybe Hamburger University.

NXNE Photo Round Up

(Fucked Up Via NXNE Flikr)

NXNE was a ton of fun. Heard awesome bands, met new friends and drank my little heart out. Running from venue to venue to catch a song or two from a band was a lot more fun then standing at Young and Dundas for a show, but that’s just me. The highlight of my time was defiantly seeing Dum Dum Girls. These girls know how to ride the all girl -group wave with their lovable outfits and amazing musicianship. And it doesn’t hurt to have cool friends either. Front women, Dee Dee Penny’s Husband is Brandon Welchez from Crocodiles who popped by following their show across the street at the Sliver Dollar and fed the girls Whiskey. These were the kids you wish you were friends with in high school.

Unfortunately my camera broke at the beginning of my adventure but thankfully there’s the internet to help us out. Here’s a round up of some of the shows I saw and the pictures people took.

New Washed Out Track Amor Fati With Download Link and LameTube

Is Amor Fati Latin for “I love fatties”? I’m pretty sure I failed that class in high school. The song isn’t as intense as the other Washed Out tracks and it’s another great jam for summer. It would be fun to listen to this while driving through the mountains or just getting stoned on a lazy river. Some people like to “do it” to music but that’s sort of gross. Actually listening to this song and thinking about sex is creeping me out. I imagine two nudes covered in pungent oils and slithering all over each other like Bleu Nuit.

So yeah, download the track over at HRO.

New Matt and Kim Video for “Block After Block”

What a perfect video to release at the beginning of summer. Just as we’re all getting ready to do the best things in life like drink beer, swim, get naked, skateboard and be young, Matt and Kim set the bar. There’s a lot of awesome going on in this video like Ninjasonik randomly hanging out with the crew and dude who tries to jump the fence but ends up bailing. Granted, it’s really easy to have fun when you’re in the party capital of Earth but there’s no reason you can’t be doing this in any city. It’s just a matter of getting all your friends together and doing the decentralized dance party thing. Inspirational.

First heard about this on Street Carnage.

Most Girls Have Slept with 40 Bands (In Their Minds)

(Photo via Hipsterrunoff)
I use to think I was the only girl that did this but it turns out, every girl does. I went to see Austra a few weeks back and Trust opened for them. Trust has pretty much the king of babes as their singer. So, the whole show I spent eye fucking the shit out of him and thought I was the only girl who did this when they saw hot bands play. Thinking that if I do this I might actually get to touch him when he finishes playing. Never happens by the way. Turns out I’m so not the only girl who does this. The girl beside me was dancing with sex vibes so strong I was worried his penis would explode into flames. She crushed all my shots, and it didn’t help that it was pretty dark inside so I doubt anyone could even see my sexy eyes. Anyways, after looking at more live show photos it seems like every girl has their way of fucking the band while they watch them play.

Guys should keep this in mind, because after the show, girls are so horny they will basically jump on you if you even remotely have the same hair color as the hot dude on stage. Just saying.

Check out cute girls rape gazing bands after the break.

NXNE 2011: Win a Trip to Osheaga in Montreal with BlackBerry

blackberry osheaga at nxne

This is probably one of the most confusing parties you’ll go to at NXNE, but it’s still pretty cool. BlackBerry (RIM), will be at the NXNE festival hosting a party where they’ll be giving away tickets to another, completely separate festival. If I were NXNE, I’d be happy to have RIM sponsoring parties but it would also hurt my feelers to know they’re promoting someone else’s festival at the same time. So if you’re in Toronto, head over to the BlackBerry presents: Osheaga 2011 party at The Garrison. Here are the details:

When: Friday, June 17th. Doors open 8PM and show at 9PM.
Where: The Garrison. 1197 Dundas St. W.
Why: You could win free tickets to Osheaga 2011 and there’s some other bands we’ve never heard of.

There’s also a surprise guest. Please, please, please, please, please don’t let it be Will.i.am. PLEASE!

Download the NXNE 2011 BlackBerry App for Schedules, News, Events and More

nxne blackberry app

NXNE is currently going down and there’s a BlackBerry and iPhone app available to keep track of the festival. For the Americans out there, NXNE is the Canadian version of SXSW. It’s a lot smaller than the American SXSW but it’s gaining more and more momentum over the years. Also, it’s a great opportunity to check out some great Canadian bands like Fucked Up. With the NXNE 2011 BlackBerry app, you can get listings and events based on categories such as Music, Interactive and Film. You can also check live Tweets that mention #nxne and customize your schedule. The app was developed by the stealthy developers over at The Mobile Cartel, who seem to be working on some cool stuff under the radar.

To download the NXNE 2011 app, simply point your BlackBerry browser to nxne.com/apps/bb/.

You can also read about the iPhone version here.
